Whether you’re a designer, a developer, or anything else, Git, Github, and version control can be the most powerful tools in your WordPress toolkit. However understanding how to use these tools or even just making sense of them can be a real struggle. Fret not! We’re here to help make sense of it all.
While Git and Github were developed by developers for developers there are now great tools those of us not married to the command line can use. In fact some of the visual Git tools are arguably better than the command line and they also make more intuitive sense to most users.
This presentation is a workshop event where your instructor Morten will lead you on a journey of discovery to learn what version control is, how it works, how to use Git and Github in your own process, and how to unleash the power of time travel and teleportation. Yes, that’s right. Time travel and teleportation. BOOOM!
All levels are welcome, but you’ll get the most out of this talk if you have some experience with coding or advanced design applications. You can choose to just watch and learn or bring your own computer and play along. For the best learning outcomes bringing your own computer is a good idea. This is why we’re meeting at BCIT where they have desks and internet hookup.
Requirements to play along
If you decide to bring your own computer and want to play along you should prepare yourself by following these two steps:
1. Set up a free Github account at http://github.com
2. Download, install, and set up SourceTree (http://sourcetreeapp.com/) on your computer
SourceTree is a Git client that uses a powerful and easy to understand graphical user interface. It will be the tool we use to see what’s going on in the wild world of Git in the presentation.
